In its broadest sense, “gulag” refers to the system of Soviet labour camps and thus to the Terror and the apparatus of repression that the Communist Party of the Soviet Union built to keep itself in power. Gulag is the Russian acronym for the Chief Administration of Corrective Labour Camps, which existed from 1922 to 1956 and was under the control of the Soviet secret police.
