During the Mongol invasion of Rus that began in 1237 and continued into 1240, Rus principalities were occupied by the army of Batu Khan – a grandson of Genghis Khan. Batu Khan founded the Khanate of the Golden Horde near the present-day city of Volgograd. The khans of this state ruled over Russia for more than two centuries.
